MySpace....16

MySpace has a wide appeal to people of all ages an ethnicies. It also has a lot of tools that a responsible parent can use to protect their children. I wouldn't mind setting up a MySpace account once I work on my profile. It is a free service that offers the oportunity to keep in touch with friends and family near and far.

Wiki's the New encyclopedia?....13

Using a wiki as a form of directory...never thought of that...always saw them as encyclopedia entries. I mean its not exactly revolutionary it still gets the job done...but there is a kind of organization there now that means it doesn't need a search bar..just follow the links deeper into the rabbit hole until you find what you want...impressive really

Instant Messaging....11

Considering this piece of software technology has been out for a while now it is hard to get rid of some preconceived notions namely that predators and other undesirables use it to prey on the unsuspecting, but as with any tool its not how its being used but who is using it that means anything, for instance setting up a public research library with a web portal that allowed IM services could potentially provide a full access reference service for professionals worldwide something people from Charlotte to Tokyo could use for free. The only problem to my knowledge would be availability. What would someone in a vastly different timezone do with a service that's closed when he needs it...but then again that's not for me to figure out now is it?

RSS Feeds and You....9

Today I read up on RSS feeds and took a good look at bloglines.now depending on how we do this I could see the library syncing up with this service to provide customizable sources of information to many patrons, letting them find out information on things like the latest books either fiction or non fiction or local library events, in a method that makes the information out of date or overwhelming...useful..

Web and Library 2.0 the dumbing down of future generations

I just finished reading the articles on web 2.0 and library 2.0 and I have to say I am disappointed. For ages the library has been a bastion of knowledge and a holder of various histories from around the world and people want to dumb the library down so that no one leaves it? If you dumb it down it becomes worthless and while I agree that the library does need to adapt it does not need to turn itself into a scholastic version of McDonalds. It is a place where the desire to appreciate and acquire knowledge should reign supreme not to find out what Sweeny McBob did last night on "Life in the trailer park". However that is not to say that i do not like the potential of web 2.0 the ability to spark creativity and inventiveness through the use of easily accessable tools does speak to me but things on paper and the actual end result are two different things, so I have no more to say on that subject until I see how it pans out.
